Corscombe Running Group is an informal local running group for people who enjoy running the lanes, trails and villages around Corscombe. We’re friendly, social and more interested in getting out together than chasing times.
Early in the week we put a poll in our WhatsApp group and members vote on which day works best.
Someone then suggests a route. If nobody has something particular in mind, one of the regulars will come up with one, and we usually firm up the details the day before.
Most runs are at around 09:00 at the weekend and last about an hour. A typical route is around 5 km, although that varies depending on terrain, hills and what people fancy doing.
Our regular starting points include The Fox Inn in Corscombe and The Lost Shoe Café. When we start from the café, stopping for a drink afterwards is very much part of the plan.
We run a mixture of trails, country lanes and road, with routes shared on Strava so people can see the distance and elevation beforehand.
Most runs stay around Corscombe, but members are encouraged to show us their favourite local routes too. That has taken us to places including Cattistock, Powerstock, Maiden Newton, Evershot and Cheddington.
Sometimes a route turns out to be muddier, hillier or more overgrown than expected. That’s fine. We adapt as we go.
We’ve even had members head out beforehand to make an overgrown route a little easier for everyone else (thankyou Tom).
We don’t expect everyone to run at the same pace.
Faster runners loop back when they start getting too far ahead and collect the runners behind them. We also regroup at hilltops, junctions and other obvious stopping points.
Importantly, when the back runners catch up, we actually give them a chance to recover. We don’t wait ten minutes, watch the last runner arrive out of breath, and immediately announce that everybody is setting off again.
The aim is to run together, not simply start together.
The social side matters too.
We keep an eye on local pub events and live music and occasionally arrange a run around whatever else is happening in the village.
Over the August Bank Holiday and again in September, for example, we ran from the pub and timed things so that we arrived back for live music and steak frites.
There are worse ways to finish a run.
Our plans normally appear on WhatsApp first, followed by Facebook and Strava when somebody remembers.
You can join or follow us through:
WhatsApp — weekly run planning and day-to-day chat
Facebook — runs, photos, news and local running achievements
Strava — routes, activities and the group
Email — contact us directly or send us something you would like featured
We also like hearing what people have been doing away from the weekly group run. Feel free to share your own runs on our Facebook page, or email us with a race, personal best, first 5K, long run or other achievement that you’d like us to celebrate.
